Frame Drums

Steam and Lumber frame drums use many uniquely Australian timbers in addition to European and American tone woods. The drums take between four and six weeks to craft and if you can't find what you are looking for in our shop, custom orders are welcome!

Blackwood 18" tunable Tar frame drum. Contemporary hand grip/ Goat skin/ Tunable.

All Zills are hand-hammered in the Steam & Lumber workshop. These zills- Turkish bronze.

Non-tunable Zilli-Tar frame drum with Japanese banding/ goat skin/ Pin Oak (Quercus Palustris)/ Steambent.

14" Zillitar frame drum with goat skin, Japanese banding, hand-hammered zills and a steambent Pin Oak shell.

All Steam and Lumber frame drums are handcrafted using hand tools such as this Stanley hand plane.

Tunable Pin Oak (Quercus Polustris)/ Goat skin/ Leather banding. Made for Egyptian drummer Hossam Ramzy.

A moment captured in the beautiful Montsalvat workshop. Montsalvat is Australia's oldest artist colony based in Eltham, Victoria.

The small 'coffin' plane is used to help shape the inside scarf join of each frame drum shell.

Custom 14" Tar frame drum with inlay. This steambent shell is handcrafted using Australian Blackwood and a Remo synthetic skin.
